The Rosemary Faye Dolan Rugby Prize Celebrates Strength of Character

Rose Dolan, the wife of a former Trent rugby player, was an empathetic listener who inspired others by her example. So reflects her husband, Jim Dolan ’68. After her passing, Jim established The Rosemary Faye Dolan Rugby Prize in honour of his beloved wife.

“…when Rose came into my life,” reflects Jim, “she definitely made me a much better person.  Since her passing, I strive each day to be my ‘Best Me.’”

The Rosemary Faye Dolan Rugby Prize not only celebrates women in sport, but women who demonstrate strength of character. Awarded annually to a Trent University female rugby player, the prize is intended for the athlete who demonstrates heart, sportsmanship and the qualities that define a genuine person.

“I believe that being an empathetic listener is the cornerstone of all genuine people,” says Jim, remembering with good humour how difficult it was to talk his way out of daily chores.

Jim describes a genuine person as having the following characteristics: highlighting the importance of others, being generous and non-judgemental, forging a path based on internal motivations and personal values, and letting their accomplishments speak for themselves without ego.

“I hope that when the team considers the female rugby player who will receive Rose’s Rugby Prize, they will select a person who demonstrates the traits of such a person.”
