Hana Worsema – Volunteer Profile
As a third-year Business Administration student specializing in Marketing and Consumer Culture, completing a co-op placement in Trent’s Advancement Office not only gave Hana Worsema the opportunity to apply her business and marketing skills in a work environment it also provided her with clarity on her future career opportunities.
“Prior to my placement I really didn't know what kind of industry that I wanted to work in post-graduation, all I knew was that I wanted to do something meaningful and give back to my community. Working in the Advancement Office and learning more about the world of philanthropy has given me clear direction and I now look forward to pursuing a career in the not-for-profit sector and giving back to those who need it most. This experience has been a great first step towards that career.”
Hana enjoys the versatility that Trent’s Business Administration program offers and believes that she is gaining skills that can be applied in a range of sectors, including the non-profit sector. As an advancement associate, she was involved in developing donor communications as well as contributing to the celebration of the successful Campaign for Trent Durham.
“I learned a lot about corporate social responsibility in the classroom and was able to apply some of that knowledge during my placement. My knowledge in the fields of marketing and consumer culture was also applicable and I could apply these to writing compelling donor communications.”
Hanna has also volunteered at a community centre in the past, where she worked with children in the after-school program. She believes that the knowledge and experience she has gained through volunteering is something all students should strive for.
“I believe that all students should take time to contribute to their community and gain a better understanding of philanthropy outside our classroom learning. Through volunteering and taking it one step at a time, we can make our communities and even the world a better place.”
Hana now looks forward to future volunteer opportunities at Trent and within the Peterborough community.
“The experience I have gained through my placement can be applied to other volunteer opportunities, such as event coordination. I’m also interested in getting involved with student orientation at Trent – the University has such an amazing and welcoming community that I am incredibly grateful to be a part of and share with others.”
