In the bio she wrote for Inspire: The Women’s Portrait Project, Jess Grover ’02 expressed her hope to be seen as “someone who is kind, someone who is creative, someone who believes in others and continues to try to make the world a better place.”
One of six Trent-connected recipients of the 2021 Ontario Volunteer Service Award, the president of the Trent University Alumni Association has indeed been clearly seen, and duly recognized, for her many volunteer contributions to a number of groups and causes, both on campus and in the broader community.
The Ontario Volunteer Service Awards recognize individual volunteers for continuous years of commitment and dedicated service to an organization. Also feted during the presentation ceremonies held virtually were Gary Cubitt ’67 and Lucie Edwards ’73, both members of the Trent Board of Governors; Maile Loweth Reeves ’79, vice-president, Engagement and Philanthropy, Trent University Alumni Association; retired Trent librarian emeritus Janice Millard ’76; and Trent Legacy Society volunteer and honourary alumnus Walter Howell ’69.
Each has been recognized previously in very big ways for their various contributions.
Dr. Cubitt, the 2017 recipient of the Trent University Distinguished Alumni Award, was bestowed the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012, while Ms. Edwards’ extensive humanitarian work saw her presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award of Excellence by the Department of Foreign Affairs in 2009.
Ms. Reeves, meanwhile, has served as a lead volunteer with the Trent University Alumni Association for 10 years, chairing the Alumni Awards and Recognition Committee for three years. Ms. Millard is a Bata Library volunteer, continuing a close to 50-year passion for the library that was sparked by her hiring as an assistant cataloguing librarian in 1974.
“The Ontario Volunteer Service Awards give us an opportunity to annually recognize a few of our amazing volunteers that give back their time and talents to Trent University,” says Hannah Routly, manager of Stewardship, Donor and Volunteer Relations.
