Alumni Awarded for Exceptional Teaching and Research
Trent University alumni among award winners during Celebration of Faculty Excellence in Teaching and Research ceremony held in Student Centre

Three alumni took home awards on Wednesday, May 3 during the annual Celebration of Faculty Excellence in Teaching and Research to recognize exceptional teaching and research at Trent University.
Dr. Jenn Cole ’02 (Traill College) won the Early Career Researcher Award; William Kim ’15 (Otonabee College), won the Award for Excellence in Teaching Assistance; while Mary-Claire Buell ’12 (Traill College) won the CUPE 3908-1 Award for Excellence in Teaching.
“Congratulations to all winners, including our outstanding alumni who continue to demonstrate leadership and contribute to the excellence of Trent University,” said Sherry Booth ’98, associate vice president Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement.
During the annual celebration held at the Student Centre, Trent recognized the outstanding contributions of faculty members in research, innovation, and teaching. This year, more than 400 nominations – the highest in Trent’s history - were submitted by students and faculty.
Other notable awards include:
• Distinguished Research Award: Dr. Hugh Elton, Ancient Greek and Roman Studies
• Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching: Dr. Elizabeth Russell, Psychology
• Early Career Researcher Awards: Dr. Kim Ritchie, Trent/Fleming School of Nursing
• Award for Educational Leadership Social and Innovation: Dr. Kirk Hillsley, Biology; Dr. Jennifer Newton, Anthropology
• Award for Excellence in Online Teaching: Dr. Erick Laming, Sociology
Their achievements serve as a beacon of the outstanding faculty at Trent and the important role they play in shaping the next generation of scholars and leaders.
