Trent Alumnus John Horgan ’79 re-elected as Premier of British Columbia
Alumni Sheila Malcolmson ’94 and Nathan Cullen ’85 Also Earn Seats

Trent University alumnus John Horgan ’79 has been re-elected as premier of British Columbia, leading his party from a minority government to a majority.
After completing his undergraduate studies in history and Canadian studies at Trent, Mr. Horgan received his master’s degree in history in Australia. Returning to Canada, he eventually settled in Langford, BC.
Shortly after, Mr. Horgan entered politics, rising to chief of staff for interim B.C. premier Dan Miller. He has been an MLA since 2005 and became the leader of the BC New Democratic Party in 2014. After his first election as leader, he was sworn in as Premier of British Columbia on July 18, 2017.
Trent alumni Sheila Malcolmson ’94 and Nathan Cullen ’85 were also elected to the BC legislature as part of the governing NDP party.
Mr. Horgan met his wife Ellie ’79 during his first week at Trent.
