Debate Title: Understanding Evil.
Calling Hitler “very bad,” or sadistic torture “very wrong” is a gross understatement. Only the concept of evil captures the moral gravity of this level of immorality. But what is evil? And how is evil related to other moral concepts such as wrongdoing and vice?
Philosopher Todd Calder has spent over twenty-five years thinking and writing about this topic. In this presentation, he discusses some common misconceptions about evil and its place within moral theory. His latest work promises new insights into this important moral concept.
