The Groarke Debate is a biannual event held by the Philosophy Department in honour of Trent's former President, Dr. Leo Groarke. These debates bring two high-profile public intellectuals to campus to debate an urgent topic of wide interest to the Trent and Peterborough communities. The inaugural debate "Artificial Intelligence: Friend or Foe?" will focus on the theme of the promises and perils of artificial intelligence (AI). Two AI experts, Dr. Lai-Tze Fan and Dr. Makhan Virdi, will debate these issues from different perspectives.
Dr. Fan is Canada Research Chair in Technology and Social Change at the University of Waterloo, where she is also Director of the U&AI Lab.
Dr. Virdi is Lead Research Scientist at NASA's Langley Research Center, where he advises NASA on artificial intelligence applications in the earth and atmospheric sciences.
