Life After Trent: the BioMed/PreMed Edition #2

Thursday, November 12, 2020 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Students from the Trent University Biomedical Science program and Premedical Studies option are invited to attend Life After Trent: the BioMed/PreMed Edition, a casual yet informative session where they will meet experienced alumni, gain insightful advice from the experiences of others in the medical field, and create valuable connections. It's a great opportunity for professional development. In this session, we welcome Dr. Paul Johnston '90, Kelsey Spence '10 and Dayton Kelly '14. Dr. Paul Johnston '90 is a 4th-generation Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, currently practicing at Riverside Pet Hospital in Ajax. He earned an Honours Bachelor degree of Science from Trent University, a Bachelor of Education degree from Queens, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph. Dr. Johnston has practiced at raceways, caring for standard-bred racehorses, at rural veterinary practices, caring for small animals and horses, and at pet hospitals. He maintains a small horse-only practice in Peterborough where he was born and raised, and still proudly calls home. Kelsey Spence '10 is an epidemiologist with the Public Health Agency of Canada. Kelsey holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Forensic Science and Biology from Trent University. She also completed her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Population Medicine (Epidemiology) at the University of Guelph. Prior to her work with the Public Health Agency of Canada, Kelsey spent three years as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of London in the United Kingdom. Her research focused on prevention of infectious diseases in the British horse industry. Dayton Kelly '14 is a second-year medical student at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. He completed his Honours Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biomedical Science and his Master of Science degree in Psychology at Trent University. During this time, he studied exercise physiology in rowers, competed for Trent Rowing, and volunteered broadly. Currently, Dayton's research primarily focuses on traumatic injury and healthcare utilization. He hopes to pursue a residency position in emergency medicine and critical care. "I could not see myself anywhere other than where I am now, doing what I love!"
